Many people have less than straight and perfectly aligned teeth. Risks are greater risk of tooth decay, uneven forces on some teeth causing bone resorption and periodontal problems, and sometimes excessive pressure on the tempromandibular joint and cosmetic embarrassment for cosmetic reasons.
A malocclusion is incorrect relationship between the top and bottom teeth resulting in misaligned bite, open bite, deep bite, under bite and cross bites are examples. Orthodontic braces are one way to correct malaligned teeth and malocclusions. Braces consist of brackets and molar bands cemented to the teeth, an arch wire is threaded through the brackets and apply forces on the teeth pushing them in the desired direction. Treatment time can vary from a yearto two or more according to the severity and complexity of the misalignment
Braces are usually made of stainless steel, but are also available in other materials like ceramic braces which are the least visible braces because they are close to the color of the teeth.After braces are taken off, a retainer has to be worn for some time so the teeth don’t drift back towards their original locations . The two most common types are Essex retainer which is clear and fits over your teeth and Hawley retainer which has a wire incorporated in it are the most commonly used retainers.

Types of Braces
- Classic metal braces used to straighten teeth, they are made fabricated from stainless steel. With metal braces you have the option of adding color elastics( O ties)for a more unique and colorful smile.
They are the least expensive braces, however very noticeable.
Ceramic braces, are transparent braces for minimum show. They are bonded to the teeth exactly the same way as metal ones. New ceramic braces work well as the metal ones and won’t stain as old versions of plastic ones.

Hygiene
Hygiene is very important if braces are worn, regular brushing and flossing using a floss threader is a must. Water flossing is also recommended especially if there is difficulty in flossing. Cleaning around the bracket with a proxy brush is also recommended.
