Frequently Asked Questions
What is cosmetic dentistry?
In today's age of technology, we at Dental Health Clinic have a range of options to help your teeth look great.
Stained teeth, dark teeth, chipped teeth, crooked teeth, and even teeth that are missing altogether, can be repaired or replaced.
Cosmetic or aesthetic dentistry is the broad heading under which there are many dental procedures that improve the appearance of your teeth.
What are retainers?
Retainers are appliances used after finishing your orthodontic treatment to ensure that the straightened teeth stay in place. They can be either fixed or removable.
Am I too old to get braces?
No. Age is just a number. Orthodontic treatment can be carried out at any age. However, having healthy gums and bones is important.
Do braces hurt?
Braces are not painful, but they make your teeth sore for a couple of days.
The discomfort can be relieved with an over-the-counter pain medication.
Is there a dental crown for children?
A crown may be used on primary (baby) teeth in order to save a tooth that has been so damaged by decay that it can't support a filling.
Saving a primary teeth until it is time for the eruption of its permanent successor is important. This way, the permanent tooth can erupt in its correct place and the need for future orthodontic treatment can be minimized.
Is sugar really bad for my teeth?
Sugar itself is not the problem. How long the sugar stays on teeth is the problem.
Given enough time, the bacteria in your mouth feed on the sugar and excrete damaging acid that can eat through enamel, forming cavities. So if you eat sugary food, brush your teeth afterwards if you can or chew some sugar-free gum.
What types of braces are available?
There are different types of braces:
1- Metal braces: Conventional metal braces are the most common form of fixed orthodontic treatment recommended by specialist orthodontists when teeth need to be moved significantly.
2- Ceramic braces: They are clear braces which offer a better appearance. This type of braces is popular with adults.
When should my child be examined by an Orthodontist?
Your child should be evaluated by an orthodontist by the age of seven.
Finding an orthodontic problem at an early age is important to avoid more complicated treatment later in life.
How long do I have to wear the braces?
The duration of treatment varies according to each case. However, standard treatment usually takes around 18 to 24 months.
Why is a dental crown needed?
A dental crown may be needed in the following situations:
- To protect a weak tooth (for example, from decay) from breaking or to hold together parts of a cracked tooth.
- To restore an already broken tooth or a tooth that has been severely worn down.
- To cover and support a tooth with a large filling when there isn't a lot of tooth structure left.
- To hold a dental bridge in place.
- To cover abnormally shaped or severely discolored teeth.
- To make a cosmetic modification.
What are dental implants?
Dental implants are replacement tooth roots. Implants provide a strong foundation for fixed or removable replacement teeth that are made to match your natural teeth.
Can anyone get dental implants?
Generally, anyone healthy enough to undergo a routine dental extraction or oral surgery can be considered for a dental implant. Patients should have healthy gums and enough bone to hold the implant. They also must be committed to good oral hygiene and regular dental visits.
Heavy smokers, people suffering from uncontrolled chronic disorders ” such as diabetes or heart disease ” or patients who have had radiation therapy to the head/neck area need to be evaluated on an individual basis. If you are considering implants, talk to your dentist to see if they are right for you
