Dental implant
- Think of dental implants as metal anchors, usually made of titanium, that are surgically placed into the jawbone to hold permanent teeth or dentures. Through a process called osteo-integration, the jawbone actually attaches itself to the implant over time, providing exceptional stability.
Dental implant
- Dental implant surgery and implant supported prosthesis have proven successful for hundreds of thousands of people over the years, with rare or no negative effects.
- If you face the loss of one or several teeth, or you are dissatisfied with dentures or other available options, you may find that implants are right for you. Age is not typically a major factor. Successful implants have been performed on young people as well as on the elderly.
- Ideal candidates have the following characteristics:
- general good health
- healthy gums
- sufficient underlying jawbone to support the implants
- awareness and good attitude to ensure following through with important oral hygiene habits.
- Implant treatment is performed by a specialized team of one oral surgeon and one prosthodontist after complete medical and dental history and a thorough oral examination including x-rays.
- During surgery, each implant is placed within the jawbone and kept for few weeks to allow for the bone tissue to grow around it and hold it securely in place.
- Immediately after surgery, you may be fitted with temporary dentures with natural looking teeth to help you function as normally as possible. You will be given specific post-surgical instructions to assure the best possible healing. Pain killers and occasionally antibiotics might be prescribed to help the healing process and to alleviate any discomfort. You will also need to limit your diet to soft foods and follow important oral hygiene instructions.
- After waiting for the implants to get firmly anchored to the jaw bone (around 4 to 8 weeks), the periodontist will proceed with the fitting of the permanent prosthesis (crowns, bridges or dentures).
- The benefits of dental implants are numerous:
- They provide a highly stable support system for the replacement of missing teeth or dentures.
- Dental implants can restore the amount of biting pressure to nearly the same level of healthy natural teeth.
- Dental implants eliminate the problems that can occur with dentures like slipping and sliding, mouth sores and clicking sounds, thus ensuring comfort and allowing patients to better enjoy food.
- Dental implant systems are reliable and have been shown to last as long as 20 years or longer with proper hygiene and care.
- People who receive dental implants feel they can again chew, talk, laugh and smile and report increased self-confidence.
- Dental implants require a time commitment and dedicated oral hygiene routine – brushing, flossing, regular dental visits – to make a difference in your overall satisfaction and the longevity of the implant itself.
- A large number of cases were treated at the Dental Health Clinic, which suffered from tooth loss .
